A vegan or vegetarian lifestyle seems to become the norm nowadays. A lot of people make the conscious choice to stop eating meat. More and more people are starting to deal with heavy consciences. Experts are increasingly claiming that this industry is killing the world we live in.
Whether you want to hear it or not, one of the most complete studies carried out until today has concluded that eating a lot of red, or processed meat can shorten your lifespan.
Getting rid of your ecological footprint
It has been proved that what you can do best to get rid of you ecological footprint is to stop eating meat and dairy products altogether. In other words, adopting a vegan lifestyle. Two researchers from the universities of Oxford and Zurich came to the realization that most of the planet’s surface is used for meat production.
The numbers don’t add up
More precisely, up to 83% of the earth’s surface is used for the production of both meat and dairy products. This leads to an emission of 60% of the total of greenhouse gases related to agriculture. To put these numbers into context: the sky-high amounts of animal productions only compose an 18% of the amount of calories consumed worldwide. Is it really worth it?
Red meat and premature death
Another study has found a relation between eating red meat and premature death. The study was carried out on the long term. They observed 75,000 people during a whole 30 years of their lives.
Opt for fish instead of meat
Participants who weekly consumed a higher amount of red meat were investigated. They ended up having a 10% higher chance of passing away during the next eight years. The study also concluded that the processed type is the worst of all. Researchers found that the best option was changing its consumption for fish; it improved participants’ health.
