Summer heat makes staying hydrated an even more difficult task. If you’re like me, just the thought of having to drink 8 glasses of water a day is enough to bring me to tears (and consequently need an extra glass to make up for it).
The need to stay hydrated is beyond just not having radioactive-looking pee. Our body composition is nearly ⅔ water, and our blood 90% water. Water helps to make sure our organs function properly, brains included! (Which is why you should always have some water handy during an exam…)
That said, staying hydrated doesn’t have to be limited to drinking boring, bland water. There are many creative, tasty ways to get your daily dose of agua that won’t feel like a chore.
A Dose Of Oats For Breakfast
Oatmeal has been labeled a great start to the day for its high fiber content, but this creamy breakfast is also great for helping to stay hydrated. Oats expand due to the water (or milk) you prepare it with, so you’re ultimately consuming liquid, in a delicious warm way. If the thought of plain oats doesn’t appeal to you, there are many ways to mix in fruit, nuts, and even chocolate, so that each oatmeal dish is a delicacy.
Freshen Up With Fruit Infused Water
Instead of sipping on sodas this summer, which are high in calories and sugar, try opting for fruit infused water instead. Not only is it a lot tastier than water, fruit infused water has a long list of health benefits, like softer skin and better digestion. Even diet sodas with zero calories are a bad option over fruit infused water– the carbonation and artificial sweeteners are big culprits for bloating– the last thing you want when hitting the beach. There’s also so many different fruits to choose from to add to your water- lemons, strawberries, and limes are our favorite picks!
Popsicles- They’re Not Just For Kids!
Remember when you were young and would always look forward to weekend popsicles or visits from the Ice Cream man? Popsicles don’t have to be just a treat for kids! In fact, they’re a great way to stay hydrated. Try buying popsicles made with real fruit juice, or better yet, making them yourself at home with these DIY recipes!
Soup For Supper
Soup might not seem like the ideal meal for summer, but there are many cold soups that are both refreshing and help get that recommended daily dose of water. You’d be surprised how a delicious watermelon gazpacho or cucumber soup fills you up without all the calories.
Produce Packs A Punch (Of Water)
There are plenty of fruits and vegetables that are all stocked with high water content. Fortunately, summer is the prime season for many delectable fruits like watermelon, pineapple and cantaloupe, all of which have over a whopping 90% water content. The perfect excuse to grab another slice!
