Nothing is more agonizing than suddenly getting PMS cramps that stop you in your tracks. The pain is sometimes too unbearable to go about your day and function like a normal adult. And yet, most females have to experience this natural occurrence every month… That’s a lot of time to be in misery! Rather than suffer through the cramps, we have these easy at-home remedies that will help relieve you of your pain!
Heating Pads
Placing a heating pad on your stomach or lower back is great for relaxing the contracting muscles in the area. This targets the area directly and naturally. Better yet, if you have a bath tub, you can soak in a warm bath with relaxing bath salts to help ease the cramps and any pain you may have in your legs as well.
Essential Oils
In addition to bath salts, essential oils are a great remedy you can use at home to relieve menstruation pain. One study found that massaging oils with lavender, almond, and clove along the abdomen region helped to reduce the sensation of cramps. The best part is that this massaging can easily be done yourself and only takes a few minutes for it to start having a calming effect.
Changing Your Diet
During your period, what you eat can have a major effect on the strength and duration of your cramps. You should avoid salty foods so as not to get dehydrated, which can increase muscle spasms and cramping. Bananas are a great addition to your diet during this time, for they are high in potassium which helps prevent cramps. Getting extra calcium in with foods like yogurt is also important for preventing other PMS symptoms. Mix the two together for a yummy, pain-relieving snack!
At-Home Yoga
The thought of doing any form of exercise is probably the last thing you feel like doing when it feels like your body is raging against you, but it is actually super helpful for relieving cramps. Light stretching and exercise through yoga is great for getting the blood flowing and releasing endorphins, which act as a natural pain reliever. You’ll be surprised at how refreshed you will feel even after a short at-home video!
